Today you are going to learn the difference between the comparatives and the superlatives. As you have seen in class the comparative is used to compare things or people that are separate from each other. The superlative is used to compare one member of a group with the whole group (including that member).
Al is nicer than his two brothers.
Al is the nicest of the three in their family.
In the first sentence, Al is not one of the two brothers; we use the comparative. In the second sentence, Al is one of the three brothers that we are talking about; we use the superlative.
