The correct use of the articles (a/an and the) is one of the most difficult points in the English grammar. Let's try to learn their uses.
A/an
1. We use a/an with a noun to talk about just one member of the class. A/an means one

My father is an engineer.
2. We use a/an when we define or describe people or things.
He is a doctor.
She´s a beautiful woman.
3. We do not use a/an with a plural or uncountable noun, because a/an means one. We do not use a/an with an adjective alone or together with another determiner.
My parents are doctors
Would you like some salt?
She is very good
The
1. We use the to talk about people and things that we have already mentioned.
She´s got two children; a girl and a boy. The boy is fourteen and the girl eleven.
2. When we are saying which people or things we mean.
Who is the girl in the car with John?
3. We do not use the with other determiners, and to talk about things in general. We do not usually use the with proper names.
