This week, we have started learning the difference between direct and indirect (or reported) speech. As we have seen, there are two ways of relating what a person has said: direct and indirect.
In direct speech we repeat the original speaker's exact words:
He said, "I have lost my workbook."
In indirect speech we give the exact meaning of a remark or a speech, without necessary using the speaker's exact words:
He said (that) he had lost his workbook.
When we turn direct into indirect, some changes are usually necessary. These are most easily studied by considering statements, questions and commands separately. Click statements, questions and commands for more information.
